Great Class!!

MCS 370: Facebook Culture, was an amazing class. I really enjoyed everything that I learned in it. I think this class explored alot of regions of the internet that people rarely talked about. The internet is a deep place, and very dangerous place if you dont know what your doing, but this class we talked about everything all the dangers and what not. I think it will be very useful as we continue along our ways. I think it was a great class.

Tweet Tweet

I think the story of the man than communicated, with his friends while he was detained is amazing. I think technology now is bulit around communication. I think text messaging is an excellent example of this. It allows people to communicate all the time without saying one word. We are able to express our feelings and even emotions with little phrases like "lol" and "brb". Everybody knows what they mean but not everywhere uses the same lingo. I think text messaging is alot like what the guy did while he was detained.

So Rob and Jonathan had been next door nighbors and rivals for years. One day Rob decided to go buy a Motorcyle. Of course trying to one up him. Jonathan went to go buy one too. But way before Jonathan had got his bike Rob had been riding up and down the street laughing Jonathan. Rob said to Jonathan, Youll never be able to ride a bike like me and began to do tricks. Challenged Jonathan went and bought a bike. JOnathan told Rob when he got his bike all he needed was two weeks to race him. Two was up it was time for the show down. So it was time for Rob and Jonathan to get down to business. Racing on an oval shaped track they came along a curve and Rob was low to the ground he scraped his blue bike but was able to keep riding. But trying to keep up to Rob, Jonathan was also low on his red Bike. But he fell off and slip across the track. After this race Johnathan never challenged Rob again, and Jonathan and Rob became friends out of mutal respect.

WOW!! I think my life is pretty organized, maybe the time I spend in each is a little off but I do know what I am supposed to do. My the only things I think I do on a daily basis is 2, 4, 5,6,7,8, 10,11. I know that’s bad and probably why my grades are the way they are. But I understand what I need to work on, and dedicate more time to. Putting these out in a list has really shown me that I have time management issues. I guess I thought my life was organized..back to the drawing board.

Say Thanks!

To Say Thanks, I wrote a letter to my mother, so I copied it into my blog. I did not get a chance to read it to her, so I put into her card for mothers day. She called me and told me she enjoyed it, so I just dedcied to paste it in my blog..enjoy

Dear Mom,
Thanks for everything that you have done for me. Being there through think and thin. From when I was in kindergarden to when I graduated High School. There for my first touchdown, to my first Gold Medal. I apprieciate all that you have done for me. Without you, I would have nothing All I have, All I am its because of you. You guided me in the right direction and because of you I am a sophmore are a honors University. Never did I think I would end up in College, let alone an honors University. Thanks Mom

I Love You,

Jason

Get Your Game On!

So I got my game on! It was so relaxing. I actually hooked up my playstation for the first time since my coach took it from me last year lol. Last year as a freshman my teammates and I were so addicted to playstation that it was affecting our grades. So once he took it away our grades got much better. But I forgot to get from him, but I recently just got it back and decided to hook it and up and see if I still had it. So I hooked it up and played for about 3 hours striaght. I think I still had it. But I was shocked to see how out of date a Playstation is. The playstation 3 makes it seem so old. The graphics were terrible. When ever I walk through wal-mart I try to take a peek in the game section. The games are really nice now adays. I think that is why kids dont go out and play as much as our generation did. But Im still more of an outside guy, ill take that over video games anyday.

Newseum

I went to the Newseum in the 7th grade. It has changed alot since I last went. They give the visitors the oppurtunity to be the newscasters. I think ill go visit there this summer. There are exhibts there featuring the New York times, there is even a interacive NBC newsroom. I cant wait to go, im actually looking forward to going.

Picture Yourself at Ninety

Jason as a 90 year old. I don’t think much about me would b that different. My friends today call me an old man. But at 90 I think I have accomplished a lot. I know im a grandfather, maybe even a great grandfather. I had a successful coaching career somewhere. Im happy. Theres nothing more than can be said. My regreats are, not having more children, not coaching longer. But im happy with everything that I accomplished and not really looking back regretting much.

Keep iSpy

I think you should keep ispy, it was a good book. It created a controversy in the class that made it interesting. Not that the class was boring but, it was just fun to talk about. I think that the Argument should go, it was just a lot of reading but said similar things to all of the other books. Getting rid of The Argument would allow to the class to add another book or internet reading.

Google Search

Im a big fan of google, sometimes ill be so bored ill just google search random things. So when we had to google search ourselves, I had done it a million times now it was actually my assignment, I couldn’t wait. When I googled searched my name I was disappointed when the person that came up was not me. The first Jason Powell I found was a information technology director at a church. The second one I found was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics at Ferrum. In order to find myself I had to type UMBC after my name. After I wrote UMBC I found myself and all of my track statistics. So I think my name actually does Google well. I did not see any negative people in the search.

Put It on a Table

A Whole New Mind—Put It on a Table

For this experiment, I was told to select an item that I liked and place it on a table and do several things to it. For my object, I chose the third place medal I received from my first collegiate conference championship track meet. It makes me think of all of the hard work I put into to get it. I know that running track is a big part of my life while I am college and I was happy to see that I could continue my success from high school. I had never thought about the person that made it, they did a get job with the craftsmanship and with the medal. I realized that the person making the medal put a lot of work into and proably got the same satisfaction out of making it that I got from receiving.

This medal has doesn’t have a major effect on my five senses. It feels like a normal medal. It smells like medal. IT doesn’t really have a sound unless I drop it. It is bronze with red and blue writing on it, with a white ribbon. I have never tasted it so I wouldn’t know what it taste like.

I don’t think the way the medal apperared to my senses changed how I felt about it. I still feel good knowing that I worked hard for something. Although gold would have been better, , I cant be selfish I have to accept what I earned. To get the gold I have to jeep working.

death by facebook

The young girl being killed for using facebook is very sad. I think its crazy that they have to live like that. But at the same time, I cant judge the way that anyone lives because rules are rules. Maybe the dad did go a little far or he definiatly went too far but the girl new she was not supposed to be on facebook, but she did it anyway. Discipling her is one thing but killing her is out of control. I think that in both cases each was wrong. The daughter was wrong for disobeying, and the father was wrong for killing her. Violence never solves anything, and in this case just destroyed a family.

The Argument--Political Blog

I visited the site, Little green footballs. I found a lot of articles what appeared to focus more on what is going on in middle eastern politics. There were a few posts concerning American politians like Ron Paul and Barack Obama. There was eve na Post that read Islam will conquer Europe and the two Americans. Along with it was a video. I would attach the video, but im not a big fan of things like that. I couldn’t really single out what kind of people actually comment on these blogs, there were post like RIP if someone had died, there was comments arguing. So im guessing, anybody that had anything to say about it would say what they felt. There were a few posts about Jimmy Carter as well so this blog was defiantly focused on politics and how people feel about whats going on.

The Argument--Political Identity

I believe that everything I learned about politics I got from my parents. Growing up in my house it was not a big political thing. But they always voted democrat. I feel like they passed that down to me. Or even I just adapted to it. Long before I knew the difference between Democrat and Republican, I felt that Democrat was always right. Even growing up with Bill Clinton as president I knew little about anything going on in the world, so once George Bush got into the white house we suddenly had a lot going on, like September 11th. So my impression quickly became that Democrats are better. But now knowing what I know, I still like democrats better because I feel they offer more for people like me as a African American male. Whether is Obama or Hiliary, it’s a change and that’s what I think America needs right now.

A Vision of Students Today

After watching the Youtube video on the vision of students today I was just amazed. I don’t think there is any other way to put it. Every sign that was held up in the class room I could just see something that I would do. The major sign that stood out to me was the one about reading 8 books in one year, and then followed it up by saying over 1200 facebook profiles. That was just an amazing accurate statement. Another sign that got me was when the girl showed the sign about her neighbor paying thousands of dollars and never coming to class. The girls that talked about how they facebook through class and bring there computers but never do anything school related, also opened my eyes a bit.
The video made it clear that way which we are being taught is boring. This way may have worked for previous generations but the fact is now we are more advanced. I feel like most people learn better through actually doing. Sure there is the occasional person that can read something and understand. But I think most college or even high school and middle students just read because it is assigned and don’t take much from it except what is actually being written. There is more to learning than that, I feel you have to do or experience to actually learn.

Wiki-Rock Star

I wouldnt competely say that I am hungry for knowledge or hungry for knowledge, but I would agree that America is not experiening a dumbing down. I feel like alot of college students love wikipedia. Me personally I love it. I will get on Wikipedia for no reason alot of the time. Most times when im just online doing nothing, Ill go read random facts on wikipedia. Alot of my friends laugh at me and things but it just something I like to do so it doesnt really matter what they think.

I feel that the founder of wikipedia is correct. The only time I feel like Im not excitied about learning new things is when the topic bores me. I feel like if kids where just thought about things that intrest them we really would know alot more.

The Community I Belong to..

One community that I belong to is the UMBC Athletics community. Being a member of the track team , I have to uphold the standards of the University as well as the standards of my team. Those standards, are being respectful, using good sportsmanship and just giving it my all everytime i compete. As a member of this community i think i can say that all of the student athletes honor these rules when we are getting ready to participate in our sport. We all put redicoulous hours into practice and into the weight room. Im sure everytime we dont do as well as we want, all of the standards go out the window. But the way we are coached is never to show that in public.

This is my community because while im at school, this is what I spend most of my time doing. I have to follow the rules and standards if I want to stay here and continue to run. Being in this community will help me for the rest of my college career, as well as when I become more of an adult and it comes time for me have a job, it will just give me the discipline. Track and school are pretty much like my jobs right now. If my coaches and the athletic department did not sanction us for rule infractions than we would do whatever we wanted. As athletes us doing what we want is counter productive. I personally dont think it would be good if we did what we wanted because most of us proably would not practice. This community keeps me in line and im proud to be apart of it.

Internet Regulation

I feel as though the governemtn is too strict on the way it regulates the media. Sure regulation is a good thing when it comes dealing with things that young children should not see, but adults own the right to watch whatever they please, without the government having anything to say. There should be restrictions on somethings like adult websites and websites that children should not see.
Reefer Maddess proved that what we see in the media and on the internet is not always democratic. The government shows us what they want us to see. When it comes to large audiences the government will show only what will not corrupt. If the internet were to become a severly regulated by the government i think it would become very boring and not many people would use it any more. To me it seems as if the government controls everything, if they took over the internet than it would lose alot of its popularity, because the internet is where alot of people expres themselves.

Consumer Citizenship

Being a Student- Athlete, I dont really think i contribute to the economy. When I do buy its nothing major, just things I want I have always been able to save money, but this summer I spent alot on vacations and things just things i wanted.

Ive never had a car, so i used my dads car. My mother pays my phone bill. Track pays for school so I really dont have alot of bills or anything. Anything I own I eiether recieved as a gift or bought when I had the money. But I am not a major player in the ecnomy, I dont spend enough.

Favorite Website

My favorite website is undoubtly ESPN.com. I also get on facebok alot, but more than anything im on ESPN. It is my homepage and everything. Sure I use facebook just like everyone else, but i love sports and ESPN is the quickest way to get my fix. My sports teams are The Redskins and the Wizards. ESPN. com gets me the information i need.

ESPN gives the sports information, that people need or want. ESPN gives constant updates on the daily sporting news. I believe this is very important because people do not know what is going on behind the scenes. But what happens behind the scenes is very important to what fans should know about their teams.

ESPN is a great site, and i love how the updates are in line with what is new. And it keeps me up to date on my Redskins so I love it!
